According to the World Health Organization, worldwide, more men commit suicide than women, with 7.5 suicides per 100,000 women and 13.7 suicides per 100,000 men. Only in Bangladesh, China, Lesotho, Morocco and Myanmar do women have a higher suicide rate than men.

"While 79% of the world’s suicides occurred in low- and middle-income countries, high-incomecountries had the highest rate, at 11.5 per 100,000" people, WHO said.

The World Health Organization said: "Although 79% of suicides in the world occur in low-income countries, the suicide rate in high-income countries is the highest, with 11.5 suicides per 100,000 people."

"Nearly three times as many men as women die by suicide in high-income countries, incontrast to low- and middle-income countries, where the rate is more equal," the WHOstatement said.

The organization’s report said: "The number of men who died of suicide in high-income countries is nearly three times that of women. In contrast, the suicide rate of men and women in low-and middle-income countries is closer."

"Suicide was the second-leading cause of death among young people aged 15-29 years, afterroad injury. Among teens aged 15-19 years, suicide was the second-leading cause of deathamong girls (after maternal conditions) and the third-leading cause of death in boys, after roadinjury and interpersonal violence."

"Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29, second only to road traffic injuries. Among teenagers aged 15 to 19, suicide is the second leading cause of death for girls (after childbirth) and the third leading cause of death for boys (after road traffic injuries and interpersonal violence). "

WHO said one way to bring down the global suicide rate would be to limit access to pesticides, which — along with hanging and firearms — are the most common method of suicide. Forexample, in Sri Lanka, a series of bans on highly hazardous pesticides led to a 70% decrease insuicides, saving an estimated 93,000 lives from 1995 and 2015. Similarly, in South Korea, aban on the herbicide paraquat was followed by a 50% decrease in suicide deaths frompesticide poisoning from 2011-2013.

According to the World Health Organization, one of the ways to reduce the global suicide rate is to limit people’s access to pesticides (pesticides). Pesticides, hanging and guns are the three most commonly used methods of suicide. For example, in Sri Lanka, a series of bans on high-risk pesticides led to a 70% drop in suicide rate, saving an estimated 93,000 lives between 1995 and 2015. A similar ban on paraquat (herbicide) was introduced in South Korea, which led to a 50% decrease in the number of people who committed suicide by drinking pesticides between 2011 and 2013.

Other steps the WHO said have helped reduce suicides include educating the media on how toreport responsibly on suicide, identifying people at risk early and helping young people buildskills that help them cope with life stresses.

According to the World Health Organization, other measures to help reduce the suicide rate include educating the media on how to report suicide responsibly, identifying people at risk of suicide at an early stage, and helping young people develop skills to cope with life stress.
