The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Tuesday that it would allow Renault Tobacco to sell its three Vuse electronic cigarette products. This is the first time that the FDA has approved the sale of e-cigarettes in the US market. Previously, the e-cigarette industry has been facing strict supervision in the United States.

The agency believes that the FDA’s authorization of Renault’s products is the first time that e-cigarette products have obtained a strong official endorsement in the US market.

Renault’s authorized sub-brand is Vuse Solo, and the three tobacco flavors that have been examined are: Vuse Solo Power Unit, Vuse Replacement Cartridge Original 4.8% G1 and Vuse Replacement Cartridge Original 4.8% G2. The FDA also rejected 10 other flavored cigarettes from Renault.

According to the FDA, the data provided by Renault Tobacco Company show that some of its tobacco-flavored products can reduce consumers’ direct contact with harmful chemicals, thus benefiting tobacco addicts.

However, the FDA also fully indicated the risks. The agency reminded that all tobacco products are harmful and addictive, and people who have not touched tobacco products had better not touch them. The FDA will keep track of the above-mentioned products approved for sale. In the future, the digital advertising and marketing scope of e-cigarettes will be restricted to reduce the exposure of young people to tobacco advertisements.

Members of the US Congress raised objections to the FDA’s decision. Krishna Motosi, chairman of the Economic and Consumer Policy Subcommittee under the Supervision and Reform Committee of the US House of Representatives, believes that many countries in the world are limiting the nicotine content in e-cigarettes to prevent teenagers from smoking e-cigarettes, while the FDA is approving the sale of e-cigarettes, which is not conducive to maintaining public health.

In 2009, FDA obtained the power to supervise new tobacco products. In September this year, the FDA said that it had rejected more than 1 million applications for e-cigarettes and related products, and postponed the decision on most major e-cigarette companies (including market leader Juul), mainly because these products may be attractive to minors.

E-cigarette does not produce smoke generated by tobacco burning, and consumers usually think it is safer than smoking. It should be noted that in May this year, the National Health and Wellness Commission issued the "China Smoking Hazard Health Report 2020", which pointed out that there is sufficient evidence to show that e-cigarettes are unsafe and will do harm to health. For teenagers, e-cigarettes will have adverse consequences on their physical and mental health and growth, and at the same time induce them to use cigarettes.
