On May 15th, the national public security organs officially issued the electronic ordinary passport. The application conditions, issuing time limit, charging standard and validity period of the electronic ordinary passport are the same as those of the old ordinary passport. Citizens only need to submit their fingerprints and signature information on the original basis to apply according to law. At present, more than 90 countries and regions in the world have used electronic ordinary passports.

Please read the report of China Daily:

China launches electronic passports – Meng Hongwei, vice minister of public security, said at a launching ceremony for the passport that it was designed according to international standards, featuring anti-counterfeiting technology and "intelligent chips" that will bring greater convenience to passport holders.

China launches electronic passport-Meng Hongwei, vice minister of public security, said at the launching ceremony of electronic ordinary passport issuance that the passport is designed according to international standards, with anti-counterfeiting technology and built-in smart chip, which will bring more convenience to the holder.

The electronic passport reported above is an electronic passport, also known as e-passport, biometric passport, or digital passport. This kind of passport embeds an electronic chip on the cover or a page of a traditional passport, and stores rich personal information such as the holder’s name, gender, date of birth, photo image and fingerprint in the chip. In 2006, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) stipulated that facial features must be stored in electronic passports, and fingerprints and iris can be used as alternatives. At present, most countries adopt facial recognition.

The e-passport issued this time is an ordinary passport, that is, a citizen’s passport that goes abroad for non-official reasons such as settling in a foreign country, visiting relatives, studying, employment, traveling, engaging in business activities, etc., which is officially called an orderly passport/regular passport, and is generally called a passport directly. In China, ordinary passports can be divided into passport for public affairs and passport for private affairs. Passports in China also include official passport/service passport and diplomatic passport. Mainland residents who want to go to Hong Kong or Macao need to apply for Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao (also called Two-way Permit).
