Diter von Wettstein is currently an outstanding professor at the School of Crops and Soil of Washington State University, an internationally renowned scientist and educator, and a foreign academician of the American Academy of Sciences. At the same time, he has been elected as an academician of Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands, Germany and other countries and the European Community Academy of Sciences. He was the chairman of the European Molecular Biology Committee (EMBO) and the chairman of the Swiss Federal Scientific Advisory Council (1980-1991). He was the chairman of the scientific and technical advisory committee of the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank and the World Health Organization (1985-1989). He has published more than 400 scientific papers covering plant genetics, breeding, plant physiology, cell biology, plant biochemistry and molecular biology. He has won many international academic awards, including Gregor Mendel medal.
