Atmel Corporation announced the provision of ultra-wideband (UWB) evaluation toolkit to help the AT91CAP9 customizable microcontroller based on ARM926EJ-S to rapidly develop low-cost UWB applications. UWB Media Access Controller, MAC) and any special logic will be implemented in FPGA that simulates CAP metal programmable (MP) module. The UWB physical layer (PHY) is implemented on the transmission and reception expansion board inserted in the CAP development board.

The AT91CAP9A UWB evaluation kit consists of two AT91CAP9A development tool kits (one for transmission; The other is used for receiving), and each suite contains three related circuit boards (motherboard, mezzanine board and 3.3V memory expansion card), a CAP9 UWB PHY transmission board and a CAP9 UWB PHY receiving board, and UWB video streaming application software. This configuration creates an application-ready) UWB development environment with video stream reference design.

AT91CAP9A UWB evaluation toolkit interfaces with a PC running standard ARM development tools for system development and debugging. This can realize the parallel development of hardware/software and greatly reduce the development time of applications. When the system is fully debugged, the UWB MAC and dedicated logic will be remapped to the MP module of customized CAP, thus providing a complete UWB transceiver system based on a few components. This low-cost, medium-batch UWB solution is suitable for wireless medical system and similar applications.

Michelle Lelan, director of ASIC product marketing of Ai Termel Company, commented: "UWB is an energy-efficient short-range communication protocol, which is suitable for many industrial and medical applications working in noisy and obstructed environments. For customers who want to integrate their own IP and UWB MAC on a single high-performance and low-cost system on a chip (SoC), our CAP UWB development kit provides a fast and low-cost development path. "

  About ultra-wideband

Ultra-wideband (UWB) is a wireless technology that transmits a large amount of digital data at a medium distance (10 to 50 meters). It uses a wide spectrum and consumes very little power. UWB can carry signals through doors and other obstacles, and they tend to reflect signals under small bandwidth and high power. UWB can play digital pulses with precise timing in a carrier signal, which occupies many channels in a wide spectrum at the same time. The transmitter and receiver must be synchronized in order to send and receive pulses with sub-nanosecond accuracy. In any given frequency band that may have been put into use, the power of UWB signal is lower than the background noise of other transmission protocols, so the interference can be minimized.

UWB protocol is defined, authenticated and supported by WiMedia alliance, and has been standardized in ECMA standards ECMA-368 (high-rate UWB PHY and MAC standard) and ECMA-369 (MAC-PHY interface for ECMA-368).

  Supply and price

Ai Termel can now provide AT91CAP9A UWB evaluation kit at a price of $8,000.
