At the invitation of Academician An Zhisheng from the Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dr Adrian Simmons, Chairman of the Scientific Steering Committee of Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), visited the Institute of Earth Environment on July 16th.

Academician An Zhisheng first welcomed Dr. Simmons to visit the Institute of Earth Environment, and introduced the general situation, research direction and recent important achievements of the Institute to the guests. Dr Simmons expressed his appreciation for the research of past climate change and the combination of the past and the modern by the Earth Environment Institute, and showed great interest in the research progress of atmospheric aerosols and their environmental effects, and expressed his willingness to carry out relevant cooperative research.

After the meeting, Dr. Simmons gave an academic report on the topic of Trends and Variability of Temperature, Humidity and Precision Over the Past Forty Years: Effects from Comprehensive Re-analysis of the Observational Records. He briefly reviewed the main progress of global meteorological data reanalysis and numerical prediction, showed the low-frequency variability and changing trend of global temperature and water cycle in the past 40 years, and pointed out that with the development of ground-based and space-based global observation systems, data integration and model prediction were also affected by observation orientation.

Some researchers and graduate students from the Institute of Earth Environment attended the symposium and discussed with Dr. Simmons about the issues of concern.

Dr Simmons is the coordinator of global environmental monitoring activities. At the same time, he is the Chairman of the Steering Committee for the Global Climate Observing System. He has rich research and management experience in numerical simulation, data assimilation, reanalysis, prediction, dynamic meteorology and high-performance computing.
