Mediatek’s processors have supported the development of many domestic smartphone manufacturers.
Mediatek was founded in Hsinchu, Taiwan Province in 1997, and its earliest product was optical drive chip. In 1998, it launched the world’s fastest 48X CD-ROM chipset (few people probably remember the significance of CD and DVD doubling now). In 2000, its revenue exceeded NT$ 10 billion, accounting for 51% of the global optical drive chipset market.
Mediatek entered the mobile phone market in 2004, when there were no smart phones. By 2006, it had shipped 100 million sets of functional machine chips, exceeded 500 million sets in 2010, and launched the first smart machine chip MT6573 in 2011. Since then, Mediatek has entered the fast lane, with 220 million sets of mobile phone chips shipped in 2012 and 1 billion sets shipped in 2015. In the same year, it also launched the Helio Xili brand.
Today, MediaTek has become a wafer-less semiconductor company with a revenue of over NT$ 275.5 billion (RMB 62.7 billion), with an annual shipment of 550 million sets of smart phones/flat chips. In 2017, it also launched the Helio X30 processor with TSMC 10nm technology.
Although MTK’s processors have various slots, on the whole, they still bring inexpensive processors to the smart phone industry, especially in the low-end market. In this respect, they are similar to AMD in the X86 chip industry. What do you think of MediaTek’s achievements? Do you agree or disagree with AMD in the mobile phone industry?
