According to the official website of Siemens on the 11th, Deutsche Bahn, a German railway operator, and Siemens, an industrial group, launched the world’s first self-driving train in Hamburg on the 11th.

This self-driving train is controlled by digital technology and fully automated. Shunting, U-turn, etc. will be completed completely without people. The original driver will take on the job of flight attendant.

Deutsche Bahn believes that driverless trains are more punctual and more energy-efficient than traditional trains. It is reported that it will join the S-Bahn rapid urban rail transit network in northern Germany. Starting from December 2021, four self-driving trains will be put into operation and transport passengers.

Deutsche Bahn, Siemens and Hamburg municipal government have invested 60 million euros in the digital S-Bahn Hamburg project, calling it "the first in the world" and it is part of the modernization project of Hamburg’s rapid urban railway system.

According to the German side, other European cities, such as Paris, have opened unmanned subways and automated monorails have been installed at airports, but these trains only run on dedicated monorails, while the trains in Hamburg will share the same track with other traditional trains.

Roland Busch, CEO of Siemens, estimates that automatic trains can carry 30% more passengers, which will increase the punctuality rate to seconds and save more than 30% energy.
