Working Principle of Electromechanical Relays The basic working principle of an electromechanical relay is based on electromagnetism. At the heart of the relay is an electromagnet or coil, which is connected to a set of contacts. When an electrical current flows through the coil, it generates a magnetic field. This magnetic field attracts a metal armature, which in turn moves the contacts to either open or close, altering the status of the connected electrical circuit. When the current to the coil is turned off, the magnetic field dissipates, and the armature is returned to its original position by a spring. This action ensures the relay operates in a manner that can control a large variety of electrical devices with minimal power input. The switch mechanism can be either normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC), depending on the specific application of the relay.
