The core principle behind a bimetal thermostat is the behavior of bimetallic strips, which are made by bonding two metals with different expansion rates. When the temperature changes, these metals expand or contract at different rates, causing the strip to bend. This bending action can either open or close an electrical contact, thereby turning a device on or off, depending on the desired temperature range. In practice, as the temperature rises, one metal expands more than the other. The unequal expansion causes the bimetallic strip to bend. The curvature of the strip is then used to activate a switch. This switch can either complete a circuit to turn on an appliance or break a circuit to turn it off. Once the temperature drops and the strip returns to its original shape, the process is reversed, thus maintaining the temperature within a specific range.
