On March 12, 2020, Renesas Electronics Co., Ltd., the world’s leading semiconductor solution provider, announced that its sub-GHz wireless solution based on RL78/G1H has passed the WI-SUN alliance FAN certification, which is also one of the important communication standards of the WI-SUN alliance (Note 1). This solution is a powerful complement to Renesas Electronics’ separate scheme of RX651 MCU and RAA604S00 wireless transceiver, and further expands the company’s product portfolio that meets Wi-Sun Fan certification standards.

The new authentication solution includes the TK-RLG1H+SB2 evaluation board of Tessera Technology Inc. (Note 2), which integrates the 16-bit RL78/G1H MCU with RF function of Renesas Electronics and the Wi-Sun Fan communication control software stack. This wireless solution can help customers quickly and easily develop devices that meet Wi-Sun Fan specifications, thus shortening the time required for certification in the research and development process by about one year.

Shou Wuche, vice president of Renesas Electronics’ emerging market business department, said: "The wireless frequency of Sub-GHz band is relatively less affected by obstacles such as walls/buildings, which makes it possible to transmit data over a long distance in an urban environment. Wi-Sun Fan is becoming more and more popular as a wide-area wireless network standard supporting MESH networks. Our certified wireless solution based on RL78 will reduce the development burden related to sensor network applications (such as logistics and infrastructure management) and accelerate the wide adoption of Wi-Sun Fan in smart cities and smart grids. "

About Renesas Wi-Sun Fan Product Portfolio

In addition to the newly certified RL78 wireless solution, Renesas also provides a high-end discrete solution that combines 32-bit RX651 MCU and RAA604S00 wireless transceiver. The solution was certified by Wi-Sun Fan in 2019.

Users can choose the appropriate Renesas solution according to the required specifications (such as MCU processing performance, memory capacity or power efficiency), thus developing various products from gateway applications (such as border routers between FAN and WAN) to terminal applications (such as routers).

By promoting the implementation of FAN wide-area MESH network, these solutions enable customers to develop new value-added products in a wide range of applications, including the visualization of smart meters, intelligent lighting, sensor management in factories or office buildings, and equipment operation monitoring.
