Cross-shaped High-speed Rail Network in Southwest China

Guizhou was not easily accessible in history, which made its communication with the outside world rather difficult. As what Guo Zizhang, Governor of Guizhou in the late Ming Dynasty, said about the place, Guizhou had the most precipitous mountains and most dangerous rivers. Today, however, Guizhou has a multimodal transportation system that offers air, land and water transportation services. In 2014, high-speed rail service was launched in Guizhou, marking the beginning of the province’s high-speed rail era.

Now the Shanghai-Kunming, Guiyang-Guangzhou, Chengdu-Guiyang, and Chongqing-Guiyang high-speed railways all converge in Guiyang, capital city of Guizhou Province. The length of high-speed railways in service totals 1,527 kilometers in the province. The Guiyang-Nanning High-speed Railway is now under construction and is expected to be put into operation in 2023. The cross-shaped high-speed rail network centered in Guiyang fuels the province’s economic development and plays an important position in the country.

  Southwest high-speed rail "big cross"

Historically, Guizhou’s transportation was extremely inconvenient and it was difficult to communicate with the outside world. In the late Ming Dynasty, Guo Zizhang, the governor of Guizhou, once said with emotion: Guizhou is the most dangerous place in the world. Today’s Guizhou has formed a three-dimensional transportation system of water, land and air. In 2014, Guiyang-Guangzhou high-speed railway was opened, which marked that Guizhou entered the "high-speed rail era".

At present, Shanghai-Kunming High-speed Railway (Shanghai-Kunming), Guiyang-Guangzhou High-speed Railway (Guiyang-Guangzhou), Chengdu-Guiyang High-speed Railway (Chengdu-Guiyang) and Chongqing-Guiyang High-speed Railway (Chongqing-Guiyang) all meet in Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou, and the mileage of high-speed railways in Guizhou is 1,527 kilometers. Guinan high-speed railway (Guiyang-Nanning) is under construction and is expected to open in 2023. The "Great Cross" of high-speed rail with Guiyang as the center has made Guizhou a decisive fast economic channel in China.
